History
The Genuine Fakes is the new hope of powerpop in Sweden. Their songs are fueled by rock and catchy singalong melodies.
Fake Family
The members of The Genuine Fakes - Joey, Johnny, Morty and Tommy - are cousins and second cousins and members of the Fake Family. All members stem from the side of the family that stayed with the original spelling of the name. They are hence part of the "genuine" Fakes. Therein lies the origin of the band name. Thought it was not initially intended as a play of words, in English it becomes an oxy moron, which adds yet another dimension to the band name.
Uniform
The band uniform was originally different colored striped sweaters but are now striped ties - all according to the traditions of the family. Also, to further accentuate their origin, they sport the legendary moustasch - a feature which is long since dropped by the Fahkes.
You might be inclined to guess that the choosing of stripe colors was made by chance and solely based on image. That is, however, not the case. Joey's color of choice is red, symbolizing the fire of the visionary and creative leader of the band. Morty has white stripes - the youngster of the band and the single band member still on the market - symbolizing youth and purity according to the old traditions. Tommy's color is yellow - the sun's color - being, that he is, the organizer and guiding light, if you will, keeping everybody focused. Johnny's color - blue - has nothing to do with being blue as one might expect. According to Fagersta folk dress code, a man can only wear blue stripes once he attains fatherhood. Being the first in the band to achieve this, blue was the obvious color of choice.
The iron men
These young men are the first in the history of the family to pursue a career in music. Coming from a long line of "iron men", it was not something that was eagerly accepted by their family. Music had never been more than a hobby and was mostly seen as a pleasurable way of passing time and nothing more. From a young age the passion lay dormant within the boys, set on being able to break free one day. Practicing in an abandoned old department store building on the outskirts of town, they were able to rehearse in peace and unnoticed. Until one day, something changed. The Hives made it big. The Hives are in no way related to the Fakes and were not burdened by the "iron man" legacy. Therefore they were not expected to honor this tradition. What they did not realize was that they had opened the door for The Genuine Fakes to break free of their leash - musicianship was now a legitimate activity.
Stockholm
Refreshed and inspired, the boys left for the capital of Sweden - Stockholm - and got themselves a proper rehearsal place underneath a pedeatric psychiatry clinic. Eager to realize their dreams of reaching out with their original blend of Swedish, British and American pop tradition, they started to make their way through the indie clubs, making a reputation for themselves, leaving no one untouched by their music. A bulk of songs ranging from the days in the abandoned department store was recorded over a two year period, resulting in two full album's worth of material. Now the hunt starts to find the right label to take them on and launch the Genuine Fake Fever across the globe.
